Transforming Africa’s Food Value Chains

AVCO Food Processing, founded by Zin Mabaso and Markus Fröhlich, is on a mission to unlock the vast potential of Africa’s food value chains and drive large-scale transformation.

In 2022, AVCO embarked on an ambitious feasibility study known as “Project White Gold” in Northern KwaZulu Natal. The objective was to assess the viability of establishing a cassava value chain in South Africa.

The vision for this project is nothing short of extraordinary — creating an entire cassava industry, from farming up to 10,000 hectares of land to processing the cassava into tapioca starch. This initiative not only aims to cater to the regional market and replace imports of up to 20,000 tons of starch but also has the potential to contribute to the global tapioca market.

Most importantly, Project White Gold is set to bring about economic and social transformation in one of KZN’s second-poorest districts.

However, developing a bankable business case for Project White Gold has proven to be a costly endeavour. As a result, the company has decided to to drive awareness for Project White Gold in order to raise the necessary funds to support this extensive initiative.

Under the value proposition of Siyaphilisana – “We give life to each other,” AVCO firmly believes that they can breathe new life into rural communities through the gifts and talents they have been blessed with. Project White Gold aims to revitalise a vulnerable community by utilising fallow tribal land under the Mabasa tribal authority, which has remained unused for years. By establishing cassava production on this land, the project seeks to not only bring life to the community but also rejuvenate the land itself.

This phase alone creates approximately 50 work opportunities for women and youth in the community. Each donation of US$1500 enables us to establish 1 ha for 10’000 mother plants. Or US$100 helps to nurture 700 mother plants.
