Market Access for Subsistence Farmers

Creating Market Access for Subsistence Farmers

Unveiling the Untapped Potential of Agriculture

The Mkhanyakude district holds within it a hidden agricultural treasure. Nestled in the heart of this region is a community of passionate cassava farmers, whose potential remains largely untapped as they primarily grow this versatile crop for personal consumption. However, we are embarking on a transformative journey to unlock their talents and empower these subsistence farmers.

Our groundbreaking cassava initiative not only opens doors to new markets for these farmers but also focuses on equipping them with the necessary agripreneurial skills and capacity-building programs. This comprehensive training aims to catalyse the expansion and enhancement of their farming practices, allowing them to step beyond subsistence and embrace the realm of commercial farming.

To bring this vision to life, we have already taken significant steps. We have established multiplication and demonstration plots, harnessing the knowledge and expertise of community members and subsistence farmers, with a special emphasis on the remarkable contributions of women (our current team of 10 part-time employees). Furthermore, we have invested in essential infrastructure, including land fencing, clearing, and preparation, collaborating with local tractor owners to ensure efficient operations. Together, we handle everything from planting, weeding, and fertilisation to harvesting, forging a path towards sustainable livelihoods.

This initiative is not just about the development of farming skills; it encompasses a much broader scope. It stands as a testament to our commitment to skill development, as we empower women and youth to reach their full potential. By engaging and supporting these individuals, we believe in fostering a ripple effect that will bring about positive change within the entire community. Through sustained livelihoods, we aim to create a brighter future for all those involved.
